Looking for an EverOak Puppy?

A Word About the Right Way to Begin

At EverOak Labradors & Sussex Spaniels, we deeply value thoughtful, long-term relationships with our puppy families. The following guidance reflects the heart of preservation breeding and aligns closely with how we operate our program.

This is shared not because we currently have puppies available — we may or may not — but because clarity helps everyone begin the journey well.

1. Stop Looking for a Puppy — Start Looking for a Breeder.

The most common mistake is searching for “a puppy available in August” rather than searching for the right breeder. Puppies are not interchangeable. Each breeder has specific goals, priorities, and standards that guide every breeding decision.

Find a breeder whose values, temperament goals, structure, and ethics align with yours. Build a relationship first. Then wait for the right puppy from that program. That may take a few months — sometimes longer. Waiting is normal in preservation breeding.

At EverOak, we breed intentionally, not frequently. Quality is always worth the wait.

2. Introduce Yourself Thoughtfully.

Your first contact matters. A brief, one-line message asking price or availability does not allow us to understand you or your goals.

Tell us:

  • Why you’ve chosen the breed
  • Why our program speaks to you
  • How you plan to raise, train, and live with your puppy
  • What your expectations are

Honesty is essential. We are matching homes and puppies for lifetime success — not making quick sales.

3. Be Willing to Hear “No.”

Not every home is right for every breed, and not every litter is right for every home. A responsible breeder will prioritize the breed and the puppy above convenience.

If you are advised that a particular pairing or even the breed itself may not be the best fit, take that guidance seriously. Ethical breeders want successful placements, not transactions.

4. Be Honest About Waiting Lists.

If you are on multiple waiting lists, transparency is key. Preservation breeders turn away qualified families once a list is full. Clear communication protects relationships and ensures fairness.

We understand timing can shift — life happens. Simply keep us informed.

5. Expect the Breeder to Match the Puppy.

One of the most misunderstood aspects of preservation breeding is puppy selection. While preferences are always considered, the breeder knows the litter best — structure, temperament, drive, sensitivity, confidence.

Our responsibility is first to the breed, second to the puppy, and then to the placement. Matching is done carefully and intentionally to give each puppy the greatest chance to thrive.

6. Once Your Puppy Is Home, That Is Your Puppy.

It is natural to fall in love with a certain color or personality trait. But when the right puppy is matched to you, that bond becomes singular and extraordinary. Within moments, that puppy becomes yours in heart and purpose.

7. Finish One Conversation Before Starting Another.

Preservation breeding is relationship-based. If you choose to move in another direction, communicate respectfully. We will always appreciate honesty.

8. The Preservation Community Is Small.

Reputable breeders know one another. Integrity travels quickly — in both directions. Approach this process as a relationship built on trust and shared love for the breed.

In Closing

This journey is not a retail transaction. It is the beginning of a long-term partnership centered on a living being carefully bred with intention and purpose.

If you approach the process with respect, patience, and honesty, the outcome will be joyful for everyone — especially the puppy.

At EverOak, we remain committed to preservation, transparency, and lifelong support.
